Description |
Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), also known as gonococcus, causes purulent infections of the urogenital system, commonly referred to as gonorrhea, and is the second most common sexually transmitted disease after syphilis. Clinically, 10% of male and 50% of female NG infected individuals are asymptomatic, and the hidden nature of symptoms further increases the risk of transmission in the population. Infection is most commonly seen in urethritis and cervicitis, which can then lead to epididymitis, prostatitis, pelvic inflammation, and infertility. It can also affect the eyes, throat, rectum, and pelvic area, as well as cause hematogenous disseminated infections leading to arthritis, perihepatitis, sepsis, endocarditis, or meningitis. Early detection and treatment are effective ways to prevent and control the spread of gonorrhea. |
