| Principle / Technology | Toluidine blue is a metachromatic dye that shifts its absorption spectrum from blue (orthochromatic) to purple-red (metachromatic) when bound to polyanions such as heparin in mast cell granules and sulfated glycosaminoglycans in cartilage. |
