Product Introduction Polysaccharides, including starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, and various gums, are major components of plant biomass, microbial capsules, and food products. This kit utilizes the classic and robust phenol-sulfuric acid method. In concentrated sulfuric acid, polysaccharides are hydrolyzed to monosaccharides, which are then dehydrated to furfural derivatives. These compounds react with phenol to form a stable orange-gold color, the intensity of which is proportional to the total polysaccharide concentration, measured spectrophotometrically.
Product Application • Determination of total carbohydrate/polysaccharide content in plant tissues, algae, and fungi.
• Analysis of exopolysaccharide production in bacterial and fungal cultures.
• Quality control in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries (e.g., for gums, thickeners).
• Monitoring polysaccharide extraction yields and purification processes.
Product Advantages • Broad Specificity for Carbohydrates: Reacts with a wide range of neutral sugars (hexoses, pentoses, uronic acids) making it excellent for measuring total polysaccharide content from diverse sources.
• Rapid & High-Throughput: The microplate-based format allows for the simultaneous processing of many samples in under two hours, significantly faster than gravimetric methods.
• Cost-Effective & Simple: Uses common laboratory chemicals (phenol, sulfuric acid) in a pre-optimized protocol, offering a very economical solution without the need for expensive enzymes.
• Includes Standard Curve: Provides D-glucose as a standard for calibration, though users can select other relevant monosaccharide standards for more specific quantitation if the polysaccharide composition is known.
