Description 1 M MES (2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid) buffer solution, pH-adjusted to 6.0 with NaOH and sterile-filtered through 0.22 µm membrane. MES is a zwitterionic Good's buffer with pKa 6.15 at 25 °C, providing optimal buffering capacity in the pH 5.5-6.7 range. Widely used in protein crystallization, enzymatic assays requiring slightly acidic conditions, and plant cell culture media.
Intended Use Buffering agent for enzymatic reactions at pH 5.5-6.7; protein crystallization screening; plant tissue culture media; yeast and fungal culture; chromatography running buffer; fluorescent protein (GFP) pH-stability assays.
Principle / Technology MES is a zwitterionic N-substituted aminosulfonic acid; minimal metal ion complexation (unlike phosphate or citrate); does not interfere with most enzymatic reactions; pKa 6.15 at 25 °C, ΔpKa/°C = -0.011
